Master in Architecture and Urban Planning in Mediterranean Environment
As of the academic year 2013/2014, the University of Split will be providing a new graduate course of study of architecture in the English language, granting the students the degree of Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Planning in Mediterranean Environment. The university study of architecture at the University of Split has existed since 2003, in the meantime winning international recognition, establishing an extensive collaboration with a number of universities in Europe (Zürich, Winterthur, Aachen, Madrid, etc) and Japan (Tokyo). It has become a distinguished study programme of architecture due to the excellent skills in individual disciplines, such as architectural design, urban planning and heritage preservation, as well as to the successful endeavour of combining them into multidisciplinary competencies.
The historical core of Split, dominated by the renowned Diocletian's Palace, has been as a unique historical site in its entirety included in the cultural heritage under the protection of UNESCO.
The programme is aimed at enabling the students to competently solve complex architectural tasks in an exceptionally demanding Mediterranean environment. Design and planning tasks motivate the students to face the problems of architectural practice in the sensitive natural coastal environment, as well as the inherited historical context and the authority of the spatial criteria and requirements. It also encourages the students to take a critical attitude and to develop specific designing skills in order to successfully rise up to developmental challenges.
Theoretical and multidisciplinary supports are ensured by a series of modules in which diverse factors participate in this creative process. This master's degree is worth 120 ECTS credits (870 hours) and takes 2 years of studying, Monday through Friday. During this time, it is strongly recommended a full-time dedication in order to develop and complete practical work. Participants will develop their design skills through an intensive series of workshops and complete their theoretical knowledge in speciality seminars. At the end of the master, the students must present a degree's final work (Master's Thesis).
The program is eminently practical and structured in Workshops and Specialities, plus a final Master's Thesis. All workshops and specialities are mandatory in order to receive the Diploma.
The study is characterized by work in small groups, a motivating and competitive atmosphere, individualized approach, and an intensive collaboration with mentors. The programme also includes, as its integral component, field trips to the locations situated along the Croatian coast (Dubrovnik, Zadar, Šibenik, and the nearby islands).
Architects from all nations willing to increase their knowledge and research field in architectural design and urban planning in a Mediterranean environment, and are able to demonstrate good skills developing projects in the time given, are invited to enrol our selection process. The minimum number of applicants is 15 (enrolment quota).
The master program addresses candidates holding at least Bachelor's Degree (first cycle, 6th EQF level, minimum 180 ECTS credits or equivalent) in architecture and urban planning.
Prospective students should have sufficient knowledge of English (knowledge level B1 of the Common European Framework CEF).
